How might we raise awareness of seabird endangerment in the Auckland CBD due to plastic pollution to encourage waste reduction practices?
Plastic waste has become a massive environmental issue, with large amounts accumulating in oceans and landfills, threatening different ecosystems, particularly seabirds that mistake it for food. This project addresses the issue of plastic pollution and seabird endangerment by creating an interactive sculptural trail across Auckland’s CBD. Each sculpture is crafted from recycled plastic, highlighting the impact of waste and transforming discarded materials into meaningful public art. Through collaboration with artists, this project fosters community engagement and awareness around the environmental hazards posed by plastic pollution. By embracing a circular economy model, the project promotes sustainable consumption and production habits, aiming to bridge the gap within the community around environmental stewardship and inspire collective action. Ultimately, this project seeks to integrate art and plastic waste into one, creating lasting connections between people and nature.
Wings of Wastes transformers discarded plastic into sculptures throughout that are placed around Auckland CBD. The trail map highlights each sculpture's location, inviting the community to engage with the art and its sustainability message inspiring collective action for a more sustainable future.
