"How might we design a network of markers that weave together narratives and placemaking to foster engagement, connection and understanding of Te Ara Tukutuku?"

Te Ara Tukutuku is a long term project by Auckland Urban Development Office to transform Wynyard Point into an urban green space. This project is expected to take at least 10-15 years, and covers 10ha. However, working at such a large scale leaves a disconnect between the current state of the environment and the visions for the future. With people also not understanding the complex history of this site, it makes it difficult for people to feel connected and excited for this development.

Waypoint is a series of storytelling markers to be placed within the 8 different zones of Te Ara Tukutuku. These markers are designed to be implemented in the present day and updated as the site evolves. Waypoint acts as a bridge between the different life stages and zones of Wynyard Point, telling the story of the past, present and future. Interactive questions further enhance the experience, allowing visitors to reflect, engage and share their experiences in the site. Together, Waypoint works as a reference point in an everchanging world, fostering stronger connections to Te Ara Tukutuku, the natural world and the communities around Wynyard Point.

Questions can be switched out over time, allowing them to reflect different contexts, events and environments as the site gets developed.
Simple interactive elements connected to each question allow users to share their reflections, leading to shared connections and experiences.

Waypoint has a range of different impacts:

Orientation and Awareness

  • Helps visitors find their way and recognise how the site evolves over time

Reflection and Engagement

  • Supports a deeper engagement and understanding of nature, culture and history

Shared Connections

  • Fosters a sense of belonging and strengthens relationships between people and place
