Light rippling on the architecture of 501 Karangahape Road

How might I use projection mapping to create an educational, insightful and impactful tourism experience for the people and communities of Karangahape Road?

Hape: The story behind the karanga, is a two-minute projection mapping experience that illuminates the façade of 501 Karangahape Road, sharing the story of Hape’s journey from Hawaiki to Aotearoa New Zealand, and his karanga of welcome to his iwi.

In 2023, just 37% of New Zealanders visited places/spaces due to their cultural or historical significance. This visitor experience is designed to create an engaging space that stimulates activity on Karangahape Road, with the goal of teaching visitors local kōrero tuku iho - stories of the past.

Hape calls out to his iwi to welcome them to their new land.

The projection experience has been prototyped on a scale model of 501 Karangahape Road.

Designed in an abstract form, this projection invites users to view and understand the story of Hape, as told by Qiane Matata-Sipu. This story is one such kōrero tuku iho that has been neglected in the modern era, creating a sense of disconnect between people and place.
