Abstract
Tidal Shift is an interchangeable installation piece that enhances learning through play. Subsequently, it also engages people of all ages to learn about our moana through the experience. Each design chosen represents an iconic endemic species with significant ties to Māori history. I believe Tidal Shift would be the perfect balance of Te Ara Tukutuku’s Values to regeneratively enhance the connection between tāngata and moana.
Tidal Shift harnesses the knowledge of many different designs and Mātaranga Māori practices to revitalise traditional Māori community relationships. As a playable installation for youth it also functions as an educational kōrero for any community member who passes its way. It's almost impossible to resist the tactile feel of the design, which will then prompt the koru mana of a species to light up. Curiosity strikes, and one moves over to the informative illustration to determine which species you've engaged with. Thus the cycle of Tidal Shift regeneratively enhances the Te Ara Tukutuku community's connection with each other and Te Waitematā.
