Respect the Rays | Reducing Skin Cancer in Auckland CBD
Partner: Resilio Studio & Waitematā Local Board

This project looks at how we can establish a resilient culture of sun safety in Auckland CBD,  leading to sustainable health outcomes. Currently, New Zealand has one of the highest skin cancer rates in the world, with more people dying from skin cancer than from road accidents. While most New Zealanders practice sun safety in extremely sunny environments, fewer do so day-to-day, and their skin damage gradually adds up. Thankfully, skin cancer is largely preventable, and prevention methods are readily available. This project creates a skin cancer awareness campaign and proposes a holistic system for behavioural change. The project focuses on the day-to-day environments we find ourselves in and draws off community dynamics to instigate conversation and, ultimately, change. The project takes inspiration from behavioural psychology, in which reinforcers are highlighted, and punishers are mitigated.
