Tāmakiwi is a kiwifruit delivery service for primary schools across Auckland.

In 2020/2021, 1 out of 6 children were living in a food insecure home. To improve children’s health, I decided to work with kiwifruit which is known to be rich in nutrients. But kiwifruit are expensive. So, how might we encourage children to eat kiwifruit to improve their health?

By using the Hautū Waka framework, I looked at engaging children in low decile primary schools to deliver kiwifruit to and adding entertainment factors so they would be engaged even more, while considering sustainability throughout the journey to be a kaitiaki of our whenua. I chose to deliver off-shelf, nutritious kiwifruit which couldn't make the market, along with a delivery truck, an interactive keychain, and an activity booklet, with a brochure and website for more information.

The Kiwi-truck

This is the "Kiwi-truck". The body consists of kiwifruit green and kiwifruit brown, representing the colour of kiwifruit. The trailer opens up to form a roof and a table, allowing children to eat their kiwifruits and socialise with friends or us. To reduce carbon emissions during delivery, this truck carries a hydrogen engine, providing strong power but releasing no carbon during the run.

The truck also carries a bio-bin, a bin made of bioplastic, which is 100% compostable, to dispose of kiwifruit leftovers.

The Kiwi-chain

This is the "Kiwi-chain". It is an interactive keychain of a kiwifruit that opens to reveal its inside. There are options of green, gold, and red, which will be handed out as a mystery.

Activity booklet

This is the activity booklet. It includes a page of basic information, then a word search, a crossword, and a colouring-in page based on the information. There is also a maramataka dial at the end.

For additional information for parents, I have prepared a brochure and a website. The brochure briefly explains who we are and what we do, and the website will contain all the information about us and a downloadable version of our brochure and activity booklet.
