Inspiring Sustainable Seafood Awareness with Handmade daily Accessories

How might we promote sustainable seafood production that upholds the tiakitanga through sustainable consumption behaviours and health awareness?

TiakiSeafood can raise awareness of sustainable seafood consumption and Kaitiakitanga (guardianship and protection) by incorporating conceptual knowledge and values from Māori culture, including Te Whare Tapa Whā. The project emphasised Taha whenua (well-being of the land or environment), Taha whānau (social well-being) and Taha wairua (spiritual well-being) through shopping bags, badges and refrigerator stickers. These handmade wool felting products enhance the local community's well-being and understanding of local cultural practices.

As consumers become more health-conscious, the demand for seafood has increased, leading to a significant environmental and ecological impact, and how to consume seafood sustainably has become a big challenge today. It has also been proven that health consciousness can drive consumers to purchase sustainable seafood.

My design vision is to create an immersive and impactful experience that raises awareness of sustainable seafood consumption in people's daily lives. Seamlessly integrating sustainability into everyday products makes it a routine choice and inspires a profound shift in how individuals perceive and practice sustainable seafood consumption.

Fridge magnets and badges
  • The badges allow users to proudly express their passion wherever they go by attaching them to their clothing or the shopping bag itself. These badges will raise awareness, spark conversations, and encourage others to join in.

  • The shopping bag allows the users to show their support for sustainable seafood practices. It uses eye-catching designs and messaging in Māori patterns, serving as a conversation starter and a symbol of responsible consumer choices.

  • The fridge magnets will deliver key messages, values, and tips about sustainable seafood, reminding the users to make responsible choices daily when they open their fridge doors.
