SeaStar

Reimagining The Seafood Restaurant Experience

SeaStar is a new certification which recognises and awards Auckland seafood restaurants that demonstrate an exceptional commitment to sustainability.

The SeaStar rating scheme encompasses five categories: Source, Treasure, Foster, Celebrate, and Restore. Each SeaStar category is assessed and awarded by Tourism New Zealand in collaboration with LegaSea and Sustainable Fisheries.

This project reimagines the dining experience at Tāmaki Makaurau's seafood restaurants with the aim of making eco-conscious consumerism accessible and promoting restorative marine eco-tourism.

The SeaStar certification is promoted by Auckland Restaurant Month and Tourism New Zealand to strengthen and restore New Zealand's clean blue image. The participating restaurants benefit from a feature in Tourism New Zealand's international campaign.

SeaStar has also partnered with local makers to celebrate our artist communities, as well as LegaSea a non-profit organisation dedicated to restoring the unique ecosystems of our marine environment. This partnership encourages restaurant patrons and tourists to purchase a Taonga token keepsake to support marine regeneration.

Taonga tokens are tablewares handcrafted using local and sustainable materials. Funds raised from purchasing a Taonga token help to support LegaSea marine regeneration projects to restore our coastal fisheries

This project provides an innovative opportunity for seafood restaurants and patrons to disrupt the industry for good. Overall, this project fosters new ways of engaging and reconnecting consumers with our natural environment through restorative eco-tourism.

We are our ocean's guardians. We are kaitiaki of Tangaroa.
