How might we encourage individuals to adopt sustainable behaviours through an immersive experience highlighting the potential for a sustainable future at the Ōrākei Basin?
This project aims to revive the mauri (life essence) of the Ōrākei Basin by facilitating and promoting sustainable water activities to protect and restore its marine environment.
Revive is a two-pronged solution. An augmented experience installation that encourages sustainable water activities and spreads awareness of the contamination issue within the Ōrākei Basin water. Visitors of the Ōrākei Basin who follow the walkway may spot four unique illustrated 'checkpoints' on the ground that feature a QR code. Individuals will scan the QR code using their mobile devices. By engaging with the designed augmented reality assigned to a particular checkpoint within the walkway, users can follow the project's narrative and experience the Ōrākei Basin in a new reality. Visual storytelling allows the users to understand the significance of adopting sustainable behaviours when approaching marine environments. Close to the area of the final checkpoint, Revive will facilitate sustainable water activities such as kayaking, paddle boarding, and pedal boating so individuals can connect with their community and the Ōrākei Basin. When individuals leave the Ōrākei Basin, they should hopefully feel inspired to spread the word of their experience and willingly want to use low-carbon water activities over high-emission alternatives at any body of water.
The experience fosters a positive community whose intentions are focused on the physical well-being of their environment. With increased awareness of protecting and maintaining our lands, the community can celebrate its natural beauty and respond in a socially, spiritually, and mentally impactful way.
