"How might we design urban spaces in the Auckland CBD that promote physical and mental wellbeing while fostering resilience and coexistence for both human and more-than-human communities?"

Paraiso represents a pioneering initiative to re-implement green spaces into Auckland's Central Business District (CBD), enhancing resilience for both human and more-than-human communities. Strategically located at Takutai Square, Paraiso serves as a natural buffer against the artificial environment that urban dwellers encounter daily. This project directly responds to the growing mental health challenges faced by Auckland CBD workers and locals, who are increasingly grappling with urban stressors and the shift to hybrid work models. These pressures have led to heightened burnout rates and diminished well-being.

By designing vibrant green urban spaces, Paraiso seeks to alleviate stress, foster community connections, and enhance resilience for both workers and the surrounding ecosystems. This holistic approach aims to create a healthier, more sustainable CBD that prioritises its inhabitants' well-being while simultaneously nurturing their environment. In doing so, Paraiso aspires to transform the urban landscape into a sanctuary that supports both individual and collective flourishing.

Paraiso integrates features designed to strengthen resilience for both human and more-than-human communities. Winding walking trails encourage movement, while native greenery enhances natural beauty and provides habitats for urban wildlife. Shaded seating areas with circular benches invite conversation, while flexible tables allow for collaborative work. A calming water feature supports local birds and other wildlife, while an art display area showcases local creativity.

A community garden encourages residents and workers to grow and share produce, fostering sustainability and community spirit. A multi-use stage accommodates events and provides extra seating when free. Thoughtfully placed lighting keeps the park well-lit at night, ensuring safety and supporting the park’s welcoming, vibrant atmosphere. Together, these features create an inclusive green space that nurtures well-being and fosters a balanced coexistence with urban nature.
