Mindlift: The use of AI for self improvement to prevent depression
Partner: Empathic Computing Institute

People are more isolated than ever before; the consequences are becoming more and more apparent every day. Stress from everyday life along with uncertainties towards the future have caused many to feel anxious, the percentage of the population with depression is rising and with no signs of stopping. The lack of a supportive relationship along with low distress tolerance accompanied by recent world events can lead to depression. So how might we provide a supportive AI for young people in Auckland to help with stress tolerance, mood regulation and changes in life and to help them find an appropriate solution?

Mindlift is an AI chatbot app that helps users in their journey of self-improvement and to reach their own resolution. The AI would act as a friend and can talk about many different types of subjects, the AI will eventually prompt the user to discuss their goals and ambitions. These goals and ambition would be broken down by the AI into small everyday tasks for the user to complete. Upon completion of a goal, the AI would celebrate the success with the user. Over time, the daily tasks will become a habit which the user would do even without the suggestion from the AI. Now, the user can feel more confident by themselves and accomplish their real goals.

This video showcases Mindlift's capability as well as the future development.
MR (mixed reality mode) left, normal mode middle, AR (augmented reality mode) right
Face to face interacting can be very different from typing on a screen and allows for more meaningful interaction. So, we provided features to bring the avatar to reality. The AR (augmented reality) mode simply places the avatar in real life through a screen. The MR (mixed reality) mode requires an additional device, which can project the avatar inside.
