"How might we create awareness of linguistic discrimination in New Zealand workplaces, so migrants are less pressured to lose their linguistic identity to conform to Kiwi customs?"

Linguistic discrimination causes migrants to lose confidence in their ability to speak, leading to a cycle where they are further marginalized and silenced. This devaluation of their linguistic identity reduces their opportunities and reinforces the discrimination they face. Despite the severity of the issue, Linguistic discrimination is often overlooked and unrecognised compared to other forms of discrimination.

This campaign creates awareness of this issue through posters and a satirical app, “Can You Talk Like a Kiwi?”, designed to humorously fail users, mimicking the discrimination migrants experience for the way they talk. By introducing the sensitive topic through humor, the app raises awareness of linguistic discrimination and fosters empathy for migrants.

At the end of the experience, users are directed to an educational website for further learning, emphasising the need for language acceptance over fluency. This campaign sparks conversations about linguistic bias and microaggressions, urging self-awareness.
