How might we educate people about the different species of birds and spread awareness?

After researching the conflicts between humans and birds in urban spaces there is a lack of education. Lack of knowledge can result in not understanding the impact we have on birds' habitats.

I would like to create a gamified walkway experience that educates local walkers in Auckland. Targeting one of the main conflicts between birds and humans in urban spaces. This information sign will be placed along the walkway for users to read and interact with. Along with the information sign I would like to add a silhouette of the bird close to the information sign, so users can also interact with the information by creating a treasure hunt. The treasure hunt will encourage walkers to learn about the look and sound of birds in New Zealand. I will make the sign interactive by adding a QR code to the board, this will open the birds song. This will help educate visitors on the sounds of nature too.

Key features of the signage:

  • Fun Facts: Engaging and intriguing details about the selected bird species, fostering curiosity among walkers.

  • Description: A concise yet informative description of the bird’s physical characteristics, behaviors, and habitat.

  • Photos: Visual aids in the form of high-quality images, helping walkers identify the bird in the wild.

  • Treasure Hunt Hints: Clues and hints designed to encourage walkers to spot the selected bird’s outline along the walkway.

  • QR Code: this code will allow the user to listen to the selected bird’s sound.

Making a treasure hunt will add some excitement to the local walkers as well as educating them on how the birds look. It will also get families more involved as the kids will love the treasure hunt.
