ARctive is an exercise therapy programme for New Zealand elders, utilising augmented reality and artificial intelligence to address well-being and depression holistically.
ARctive highlights the mind-body connections and focuses on physical well-being that is often left unaddressed in mental health resources. Its goal is to enhance overall health and reduce the risk of depression.
The programme has three aspects that are guided by an avatar named Arc. The three main aspects are:
- An augmented reality exercise space
- Receiving advice on well-being
- Health progress/highlights page
The augmented reality space serves as a tool for both mental and physical exercise, training the cognitive ability of shape-to-colour memory, as well as physical activity. Arc takes on the role of an exercise trainer, providing instructions and encouraging movement. The exercises are structured in rounds, gradually increasing the difficulty of brain training and physical movements.
Arc encourages users to express their emotions and respond by acknowledging their feelings, giving comfort, and providing advice on steps to take.
Users can see their personal achievements on the ARctive programme and also see the community highlights. Arc fosters community connections and support by guiding users to send 'hearts' to acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of others.
ARctive is not marketed as a mental health solution but as a tool to enhance health and well-being. This approach makes ARctive more accessible and appealing to those who might be hesitant about seeking mental health resources. ARctive partners with companies to create affordable headset loaning systems and user support, starting from delivery, setting up the ARctive package, and on-call assistance. The programme can be purchased separately by users who already own headsets.
